Poseidon Linux


Poseidon Linux was designed as a friendly and complete desktop, based on open source software, and aimed at the Brazilian/International academic and scientific community. This operating system is based on Ubuntu since its version 3.0 (before ir was based on Kurumin/Knoppix Linux) and was inspired by Quantian Linux. It offers several specific tools in the areas of GIS, 3D Visualization, Mathematics, Statistics, Genetics, Biochemistry and several other fields of research. It also has all the software expected in a modern desktop such as a complete office suite (with spell checker for several languages), web browsers, e-mail readers, instant messaging, several multimedia packages, text and HTML editors, etc.
With Poseidon Linux 3.0 they started a new era for the project, since the new release supports Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish, English and German. With Poseidon 3.1 they expanded the included languages to have also Greek, Italian and French, and, also, the team had announced -for the very first time- two versions: for 32 and 64 bits computers.

What is Ice?

ICE
If you are currently using Peppermint One then you have already been exposed and are using Prism. If you haven’t,then let us take a second and explain what Ice is. Ice is, by definition, a Site Specific Browser [SSB] that Peppermint creator Kendall Weaver wrote himself as a means to launch Web Applications and/or  Cloud Applications [SaaS - Software As A Service, PaaS - Platform as a Service] from the new Peppermint Ice OS. When you launch a web based application using Ice it will call up a custom SSB using the default Chromium Browser. So, essentially, the Ice SSB acts as software that is installed locally but is actually delivered via the Web.
The difference in using an SSB as opposed to using a tabbed browser is that only one function is assigned to the Ice SSB.  In a tabbed browsing system, with several open for example, if one service or site in any given tab crashes you run the risk of losing data by crashing the other tabs and potentially the browser itself. since an SSB is isolated and dedicated to only operating the web application of your choice, if it crashes or hangs, it does not effect the rest
of the system. And, because the Ice SSB’s are so sleek, they are perfect for running apps that display better using the most screen area as possible.

Peppermint OS: Something a Little Different

We’re proud to be here working on Peppermint and when you see it I think you’ll understand our enthusiasm.
People have been trying to create an effective web centric operating system for years now. This is especially true in Linux with projects like theUbuntu Netbook RemixGoogle Chrome OS, and Moblin all coming to the forefront in recent years. On the downside of things, these systems, though great for surfing the web, lack a lot of the familiarity that people demand from something they use on a day to day basis. Here at Peppermint, we’re committed to giving you a system that won’t throw you for a loop while trying to get things settled in.
While conceptualizing Peppermint, we toyed around with a lot of ideas trying to determine how best to meet our goal of providing a fast, web-centric operating system that’s easy to learn and effective when put in use. The end result was a decision to use an interface that stays out of your way and let’s you go about your business. The default desktop environment for Peppermint is LXDE (literally, “Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment”) which has shown itself time and again to be user friendly, easy on the eyes, and wicked fast.
On another front we long pondered how best to incorporate a plethora of effective web applications in an easy to use manner. The result of this deliberation was Mozilla Prism. Prism is a framework that creates SSB’s (single site browsers) around web applications to help them better integrate with the desktop. Our lead developer also wrote a custom front end for Prism that works with the LXDE menu system to provide seamless integration of your local apps and your web apps.

A New philosophy…

As long time Linux users and supporters we have seen certain levels of divide in the Linux community. We have also seen over the years the tendency to not kindly invite new users to Linux who are exploring and looking for an answer beyond the two seemingly defacto systems that dominate the market. The biggest breath of fresh air in the past few years have been Ubuntu and Linux Mint with their commitment to community and offering a welcome place for all to explore.
The notion that in order to use, enjoy and be proficient with Linux is that you will need uber-geek hacking skills is completely False. And, this is just the stigma surrounding Linux that needs to be erased once and for all with Peppermint. There hasn’t been one person we have shown Peppermint OS to who hasn’t understood how to operate it as a desktop environment by just putting it in front of them and turning it on…
Team Peppermint is committed to welcoming new Linux users, offering them a product that is fast, easy to understand, and offering them an arena to experiment with Linux and all the while offering avenues to educate them further. penaOS


penaOS is a linux distribution that aims to help people to write scientific articles. Basically it integrates openoffice with zotero, a plug-in of the browser Mozilla Firefox. Zotero is a plug-in to manage the reference you have, just like endnote or refman.
PenaOS is built on the stable Ubuntu 8.04 LTS. The old version of Ubuntu is used because we prefer stability in building the base of penaOS. PenaOS also has the complete set of multimedia codec, so you will be able to play most of the multimedia type with penaOS. Why is this important? Because making scientific paper is not only a matter of scientific ability, but also about mood.
After a long waiting, almost a year i think, the first version of penaOS released. The first released version is penaOS 0.7.
In this release, penaOS based on Ubuntu 8.04.3 Hardy Heron include the following software :
  • GNOME Desktop Environment
  • OpenOffice 2.4
  • Firefox ( with plugins zotero, downthemall and fireFTP, along with bookmarks of medical journals)
  • Balsa (an email software, integrated with GNOME)

PC/OS



PC/OS roots are derived from the Ubuntu distribution. Ubuntu is created and maintained by Canonical Inc. and has a vast community support system. By basing PC/OS on this outstanding base we cover two grounds, a lot of the problems and fixes are in line with Ubuntu. Many fixes for Ubuntu and Xubuntu work on PC/OS. All software compiled for Ubuntu runs on PC/OS and should anything happen to PC/OS users can still get their fixes from Canonical and maintain their distribution and makes the migration smoother. The desktop is based off of XFCE and is laid out similar to the BeOS. PC/OS does not aim to be a ground up reimplimentation of the BeOS but to be as simple to use as the BeOS was. The XFCE desktop is light,modern and powerful. It can be used to power the newest workstations as well as older hardware allowing you to get the maximum potential out of your investment.

What can I do with PC/OS

It is your computer, do with it what you want. if you want to watch that Windows Media file, go right ahead. Your music files not in .ogg, thats fine by us. Do you want to watch that flash video on YouTube? go ahead.

Of course, we do encourage the open route. Open Source doesnt survive without contribution but you as users should have the freedom to do whatever it is you want to do.

We also encourage consistency. XFCE is our desktop, not GNOME, not KDE, not TWM, not PWM. of course in accordance with our first part of the mission statement the others are available for download and installation.

Parted Magic


Parted Magic 4.5
This new version of Parted Magic has some major updates. Users can now get online with dial-up networing through our "Start Network" program. Parted Magic is not in the desktop media business, but ALSA sound drivers and ALSA core programs were added if you would like to use a media player. We highly suggest Slackware-12.x packages. Unionfs is now being used for the big directories and Parted Magic's RAM usage, with the "default" boot option, has been halved. That's right, it only takes 256MB of RAM to run completely run from system memory and free up that CDROM drive or USB stick. At boot time the SSH daemon is started and public keys are generated, so that's one less thing for people using SSH to deal with. Last but not least you will notice that Super Grub Disk is now an option in the boot menu.

Parsix Linux


What's Parsix GNU/Linux?
Parsix GNU/Linux is a live and installation CD derived from KANOTIX and based on Debian. It is a complete GNOME centric desktop oriented distribution. Pardus Linux


Pardus 2009, the latest version of the Pardus Project, a GNU/Linux being actively developed in TÜBİTAK UEKAE (National Research Institute of Electronics and Cryptology) and easy to install and use no matter the user's experience level, is made available to users all around the globe. Any and every application a desktop user might need is included in the Install CD of Pardus 2009. Pardus 2009 aims for those users that have at least a basic knowledge and understanding of using computers and that use a personal computer for daily needs.
This latest version of the Pardus Project, Pardus 2009, provides a faster, high-quality and brand new desktop experience. With the enhancements and improvements in YALI and PiSi, Pardus 2009 now has an installation procedure almost two times faster than what it used to be, providing an astonishing installation speed of 15 minutes on an average computer. YALI now also provides advanced rescueing and troubleshooting options like reinstallation of the bootloader and downgrading packages by "undo"ing upgrades.
In Pardus 2009, with the help of the developed cache mechanism, Package Manager and PiSi now work much faster. The improved packaging mechanism of PiSi allows an average of up to 20 percent less disk usage for packages. The delta package system being on by default, Pardus 2009 not only uses less network bandwidth, but also operates much faster when it comes to package installation and update operations. Also improved is the component system, now providing an even easier means of finding tools, libraries, drivers or applications.

A problem-free and fast boot

Booting of systems using Pardus, with the updates in YALI, improvements in the boot process, and new features added to PiSi and COMAR, have become much faster. Also notable is the development of infrastructure for a better support to remote filesystems.
Pardus 2009 also includes a Network Plasma Widget that allows quickly changing network profiles and a Service Plasma Widget that allows managing and seeing the status of services easily, improving system management even further. Worth noting is that almost all Pardus management tools have been re-written and made compatible with new KDE4 technologies.

A superior file manager

The latest and greatest stable KDE version, KDE4, is installed by default with Pardus 2009. Furthermore, the latest versions of all KDE software compatible with the newest KDE version is included in Pardus' repositories. Plasmoid technology that allows each and every component being embedded right onto the desktop, Strigi search technology that integrates in an excellent manner with the desktop, integrated visual effects, remote management, and file manager Dolphin, itself including many improvements, are just a few of the innovative changes users should expect with the installation of Pardus 2009.
A new generation filesystem, Ext4 has become the default filesystem of Pardus 2009. Compared to Ext3, its predecessor, Ext4 is more capable in terms of filesystem, has more restrictive abilities, and runs much faster. The newest Pardus tool, System Manager allows changing system-wide settings like keymap, system language and timezone much more easily, and on-the-fly.

Why Pardus 2009?

Pardus 2009, a Linux-based operating system that everybody can easily install and use, provides everything a user might need an operating system for. With its fast, secure and stable infrastructure, opens the free world of open source to its users. Pardus 2009 aims at all "computer literate" users, those that have at least a surface knowledge of computer technologies, that use his/her personal computer for daily needs, and that can choose software or hardware for what he/she wants to do. To be able to use Pardus 2009 does not require knowledge of how a computer works in the background, just being able to choose or find the needed application is more than enough.

Better experiences

Preinstalled with Pardus 2009 comes a free desktop environment, KDE 4.2, providing users with a much better desktop experience and much more than what they have seen up until now. Bringing anything needed right onto the desktop, KDE presents a really fast and highly efficient workspace to the users. KDE includes most of the tools needed for daily desktop needs. One of the most interesting pieces of KDE version 4.2 is the plasma applets. Kaptan (Turkish for 'Captain') that greets users after the installation is now much more talented. A user can easily configure his/her desktop, re-place the panel, choose a wallpaper and a desktop theme, and set his/her connection details with the help of Kaptan. Including smart search options and an online tour to Pardus, Kaptan also allows adding the Contribution repository that contains hundreds of free software to that particular Pardus

Installation

Connecting to wired of wireless networks is the easiest of all operating systems when using Pardus 2009, with its many assistive and authentic technologies aimed at making users' lives easier in managing and using their computers. Users will find all these management tools and more in the management interfaces improved further in Pardus 2009. In the profiles created with the advanced-and-yet-easy-to-use network manager, connecting to the Internet is really easy and it is possible to change static IP behavior and DNS server settings with the click of a button.

Ever-Faster

Pardus 2009 also allows installing many applications in the package repositories with just a few clicks. These select applications and packages will get installed right away with PiSi, not needing any compilation and any complicated settings or tweaks. All the user needs to do is the find the newly-installed application in the menu and start it by clicking on its name.
One of the most revolutionary and innovative changes with Pardus 2009 is the ability of delta packages, making it unnecessary to download the whole application in an update or upgrade. Consider that the application the user listens to his/her MP3 files has released a new version. It is not necessary to search for, find, download, uninstall the old version and install the new version by clicking many 'Next' buttons. Pardus Package Manager, running on top of PiSi, fetches all updates with the click of a button. In its simplest terms, Package Manager downloads only the 'difference' of the old and new versions, a small delta file in technical terms. With this new feature, updates are now no more than 10 percent of the original package in terms of size. In other terms, Pardus 2009 is the best friend of users with limited internet connectivity, preserving their quota.

OpenGEU


OpenGEU, previously known as Geubuntu, is a complete and fully functional Operative System based on the popular Linux Distribution Ubuntu. OpenGEU, a project started and designed by the Italian artist Luca D.M. (aka TheDarkMaster), is perfect for any Desktop, Laptop PC or even for aVirtual Machine. OpenGEU mixes the power and simplicity of Ubuntu and parts of the Gnome Desktop with the wonder and astonishing eye-candy ofEnlightenment DR17.
OpenGEU will be a new experience for any user trying to run a stand-alone E17 Desktop in the past. To know exactly what Enlightenment is, we suggest you visit the Home Page of the project. On the user side, E17 appears as an incredibly nice looking Desktop Shell, composed of a Window Manager, a full set of libraries, a Desktop and a collection of modules and applications. NetSecL Linux



The project started as a Linux distribution spread among friends and soon enough was spread in Internet by the name of ISlack. The focus of the Linux distribution was on security. Initially only configuration was hardened later on GrSecurity began playing a big role in the Linux distribution. The distribution used tgz (Slackware Linux) Packages, the current version of NetSecL Linux uses rpm package management and is based on OpenSuse. Penetration testing became also one of the focuses of the Linux distribution - the distribution includes well know application as Metasploit, Wireshark, Etherape, OpenVas, Nmap as well as many console applications for penetration testing. 

NetSecL ToolSet is a subproject of NetSecL Linux containing all penetration tools as in the LiveCD of NetSecL Linux. The goal of this sub project is to have a minimal linux distribution in VM with a shh webshell (ajaxterm), no GrSecurity or hardening as in the live cd. After starting the appliance you can use it remotely via ssh or via web browser on http://ip:8022 user:tux password:linux root password is also linux.

Moblin Linux


Moblin is an open source project focused on building a Linux-based platform optimized for the next generation of mobile devices including Netbooks, Mobile Internet Devices, and In-vehicle infotainment systems.
The Moblin Architecture is designed to support multiple platforms and usage models ranging from Netbooks to Mobile Internet Devices (MID), to various embedded usage models, such as the In Vehicle Infotainment systems. The central piece of the architecture is the common layer we call "Moblin Core", a hardware and usage model independent layer that provides one uniform way to develop such devices. Underneath the Moblin Core sits the Linux kernel and device drivers specific to the hardware platform, and above the Moblin Core are the specific user interface and user interaction model for the target device.

Moblin Core

Moblin Core is the heart of the Moblin software platform. It provides a feature rich common base shared among form factor-specific platform implementations, such as netbooks, MIDs, and automotive. Moblin Core consists of platform libraries and application services providing rich functional platform building blocks. It does not provide application user interfaces or specific user interaction shells. Such functionality is provided by a platform-specific implementation, produced by Moblin or a third party.
Moblin Core is built on the GNOME Mobile platform, extending and enriching it with Intel open source technologies like ClutterGUPnP, and Atom specific technologies, such as graphics, fast boot, and power saving.
Moblin Core will follow the GNOME Mobile 6 month release cycle (starting with 2.26 in 2009) staying in sync, retaining compatibility and contributing improvements back to the GNOME Mobile and Desktop platforms. Moblin Core itself is expected to grow and mature as actual platform implementations are created, starting with Moblin NetBook.

Manhattan OS


Manhattan OS's purpose is to produce a simplistic, intuitive, up to date and easy to use Linux distribution.
Manhattan OS is an up and coming Linux distribution. Originally launched as an experiment to make Linux easier for it's developers, it has now become somewhat of a phenomenon and is developing into arguably the most user-friendly distributions or operating systems on the market - complete with a custom panel (AWN), social menus, global menus and buttons, a custom Compiz engine, applications that most people need for day to day use, as well as a software center allowing easy access to many more programs. This project develops with one goal in mind: to present the easiest operating system with the most features possible. The developers are in constant collaboration with their community, which is constantly growing and suggesting improvements.
Some of the attractions of Manhattan OS are:
  • Improvements are constantly being made, and new features are always being implemented as they are suggested or 'discovered'. Whether these ideas come from a post on the forums, the fan page, or from an interesting news article on Web Upd8 or OMG! Ubuntu!, you can be sure that you'll probably see some of these implemented sometime in the future!
  • It is a Debian-based distribution which allows access to some of the most robust packaging managers and package selections in the Linux world!
