Ultimate Boot CD

You need the Ultimate Boot CD if you want to:
  • Run floppy-based diagnostic tools
from CDROM drives. More and more PCs are shipped without floppy drives these days, and it is such a royal pain when you need to run diagnostic tools on them.
  • Free yourself from the slow loading speed of the floppy drive. Even if you do have a floppy drive, it is still much much faster to run your diagnostic tools from the CDROM drive, rather than wait for the tool to load from the floppy drive.
  • Consolidate as many diagnostic tools as possible into one bootable CD. Wouldn't you like to avoid digging into the dusty box to look for the right floppy disk, but simply run them all from a single CD? Then the Ultimate Boot CD is for you!
New! Run Ultimate Boot CD from your USB memory stick. A script on the CD prepares your USB memory stick so that it can be used on newer machines that supports booting from USB devices. You can access the same tools as you would from the CD version.
When you boot up from the CD, a text-based menu will be displayed, and you will be able to select the tool you want to run. The selected tool actually boots off a virtual floppy disk created in memory.

Yellow Dog

What is Yellow Dog Linux?

An open source, Linux operating system for home, office, server, and cluster users. Built upon the RHEL/CentOS core, Terra Soft and now Fixstars has since the spring of 1999 developed and maintained YDL for the Power architecture family of CPUs. This focus and dedication has lead to the world's leading Linux for the Power architecture.

What is included?

Yellow Dog Linux combines a no non-sense graphical installer with support for a wide range of Power hardware, leading (but not bleeding) edge kernels and stable, functional compilers for code development. And of course, the foundation applications and servers expected for web, database, email, and network services. Greater than 2000 packages are included on the Install DVD.

A history of dedication and innovation.

YDL v6.1 brings to close a decade of support for the Power architecture by Terra Soft while introducing Fixstars' first release. What's more, YDL v6.1 expands support for Cell development with the introduction of the IBM Cell SDK v3.1, Barcelona Superscalar, and a suite of updated developer tools while maintaining the E17 desktop for a rich, dynamic, and powerful end user experience.

Vector Linux

Speed, performance, stability -- these are attributes that set VectorLinux apart in the crowded field of Linux distributions. The creators of VectorLinux had a single credo: keep it simple, keep it small and let the end user decide what their operating system is going to be. What has evolved from this concept is perhaps the best little Linux operating system available anywhere.
For the casual computer user you have a lightning fast desktop with graphical programs to handle your daily activities from web surfing, sending and receiving email, chatting on ICQ or IRC to running an ftp server.
Power users will be pleased because all the tools are there to compile their own programs, use the system as a server or perhaps the gateway for their home or office computer network.
Administrators will be equally as pleased because the small size and memory requirements of the operating system can be deployed on older machines maybe long forgotten.

Ultima Linux

Ultima Linux is a fast, powerful, and above all convenient computer operating system, available for Intel and AMD-based personal computers. It emphasizes a "common sense" approach to development, and eases common system administration tasks through a largely set-it-and-forget-it mentality. Although first intended as a lightweight, techie-oriented desktop system when development began in November 2004.
Ultima has since evolved into a highly stable distribution supporting both desktop and server capabilities, and enjoys much of its popularity as an alternative to proprietary products such as Microsoft Windows.

Ultimate Edition

The Ultimate Edition's theme looks stunning. It's clear that it wants to be in the spotlight. It's not your simple, average-looking theme. With glossy blacks and gorgeous blue colors, it still manages to not fall on the too-much-bling side and hurt your eyes. There's not one element left untouched. The cursor is big, shiny and spinning. When the system is "busy," it transforms into a globe that displays the Ultimate Edition's initials. One downside is the fact that the animation can be a bit choppy if you don't have the graphics driver initialized.
Immediately after logging in, the GNOME Do window popped up. If you don't know what GNOME Do is, let me tell you that it is an extremely versatile application for launching programs, controlling your music player, and much more. Though I'm very fond of this program, it would have been best if it didn't pop up automatically at startup. Except for the theme, the interface layout is GNOME's default. Speaking of themes, entering the Appearance Preferences will sweep you off your feet with the huge selection of extra alternatives. You will also notice a message saying that, "The current theme suggests a font." Click on it and the font will be changed from the default "Sans" to "Liberation Sans."
There are some applications, such as the included CompizConfig Settings Manager, that use a dark blue font on some menus. Add that to the black background applied by the default theme and you will have to squint in order to read the text. Fortunately, you have plenty of other choices.
Ultimate Edition 2.2 comes with a very nice software collection, especially for multimedia purposes. But let's look first in the Accessories menu. Avant Window Navigator is at the top of the list, so if you're a Dock fan, you're all set. The next item that gets your attention is "Dynamic wallpaper." Sounds interesting, doesn't it? Opening it will place an icon in the tray from where you can configure a location and choose out of four "themes". Having done that, the wallpaper will automatically change depending on the current weather and time of day. The wallpapers aren't all that great but, if your room's window is too far away, they provide a great way to check on the weather. Shutter, Guake Terminal, gDesklets are other nice, useful apps.
Moving on to the Graphics section, Blender, Fotoxx or Drawpile are some of the additions that provide you with hours of artful time-wasting or, why not, work. For all that is Internet-related, Ultimate Edition gives you aMSN, Google Gadgets, Kopete, kFlickr, Giver, Vuze, FrostWire, and more. For office tasks, besides the ubiquitous OpenOffice suite, you get GnuCash and HomeBank. In the Programming area, there are a lot of IDEs, editors, diff viewers, and more.
To give you a sense of the number of multimedia apps, let me tell you that the Sound & Video menu has to be scrolled on our 1280x1024 display. Just to name a few, they include Amarok, Audacious, DVD Styler, gtk-recordMyDesktop, Miro, LIVES, sound converters, MP3 splitters and Audacity. Of course, Ultimate Edition also comes with all the necessary video and audio codecs pre-installed. Last but not least, Ubuntu Tweak, dvdisaster and Wine + Wine-Doors are a bunch of extremely useful tools that you'll like. I also wanted to check Ultamatix, but unfortunately it couldn't detect the Internet connection, thus couldn't start.

Tiny Core Linux

Tiny Core Linux is a very small (10 MB) minimal Linux Desktop. It is based on Linux 2.6 kernel, Busybox, Tiny X, Fltk, and Jwm. The core runs entirely in ram and boots very quickly.
It is not a complete desktop nor is all hardware completely supported. It represents only the core needed to boot into a very minimal X desktop typically with wired internet access.
The user has complete control over which applications and/or additional hardware to have supported, be it for a desktop, a netbook, an appliance, or server, selectable by the user by installing additional applications from online repositories, or easily compiling most anything you desire using tools provided.

About Our Project

Our goal is the creation of a nomadic ultra small desktop capable of booting from cdrom, pendrive, or frugally from a hard drive. The desktop boots extremely fast and is able to support additional applications and hardware of the users choice. While Tiny Core always resides in ram, additional applicatons extensions can either reside in ram, mounted from a persistent storage device, or installed into a persistent storage device.
We invite interested users and developers to explore Tiny Core. Within our forums we have an open developement model. We encourage shared knowledge. We promote community involvement and community built application extensions. Anyone can contribute to our project by packaging their favorite application or hardware support to run in Tiny Core. The Tiny Core Linux Team currently consists of eight members who peruse the forums to assist from answering questions to helping package new extensions.

System Rescue

SystemRescueCd is a Linux system rescue disk available as a bootable CD-ROM or USB stick for administrating or repairing your system and data after a crash. It aims to provide an easy way to carry out admin tasks on your computer, such as creating and editing the partitions of the hard disk.
It comes with a lot of linux software such as system tools (parted, partimage, fstools, ...) and basic tools (editors, midnight commander, network tools). It requires no installation since you just have to boot on the CD-ROM. It can be used to perform admin tasks on both linux servers, linux desktops or windows boxes. The kernel supports most of the important file systems (ext2/ext3/ext4, reiserfs, reiser4, btrfs, xfs, jfs, vfat, ntfs, iso9660), as well as network filesystems (samba and nfs).

System tools included

  • GNU Parted creates, resizes, moves, copies partitions, and filesystems (and more).
  • GParted GUI implementation using the GNU Parted library.
  • Partimage popular opensource disk image software which works at the disk block level
  • FSArchiver flexible archiver that can be used as both system and data recovery software
  • File systems tools (for Linux and Windows filesystems): format, resize, and debug an existing partition of a hard disk
  • Ntfs3g: enables read/write access to MS Windows NTFS partitions.
  • sfdisk saves / restores partition table (and more).
  • Test-disk tool to check and undelete partition, supports reiserfs, ntfs, fat32, ext2/3 and many others
  • Memtest+ to test the memory of your computer (first thing to test when you have a crash or unexpected problems)
  • Network tools (Samba, NFS, ping, nslookup, ...) to backup your data across the network
Browse the short system tools page for more details about the most important software included.
Browse the detailed package list for a full list of the packages.

Advanced uses

SystemRescueCd is available for blind people. Now, the linux speakup screen reader is working well, and the speakup keymap is installed. This feature was tested by Gregory Nowak. Please note that you need SystemRescueCd-1.1.0 or later. Notes specific to using speakup in SystemRescueCD are available on the speakup info page.
It is possible to make customized versions of the CD. For example, you can add your own scripts, to make an automatic restoration of the system. It's also possible to burn a customized DVD, with SystemRescueCd and 4.2 GB for your data (backup for example). Read the manual for more details. There is a new manual chapter that explains How you can burn a DVD+RW from SystemRescueCd
You can use SystemRescueCd to backup data from an unbootable Windows computer, if you want to backup the data stored on a Windows computer that cannot boot any more.
It is very easy to install SystemRescueCd on an USB stick. That's very useful in case you can't boot from the CD drive. You just have to copy several files to the stick and run syslinux. The install process can be done from Linux or Windows. Follow instructions from the Manual for more details.

Singularity Linux

Singularity Linux is a Linux distribution based on Linux Mint  9 Fluxbox the uses both the Fluxbox and Gnome environments. It's goal is to provide the best software available while not being redundant. To achieve this, Singularity Linux uses a mix of Qt and GTK software, although only a few Qt apps are installed by default. As this is a small project and because the creator (me) does not quite know how and does not have a webserver to host it from, there is no repository for Singularity Linux and the only way to update is by backing up your files, downloading the iso and installing it again.
I apologize for this inconvenience, however it does guarantee that packages will not break during the upgrade. Also, because this is an alpha, expect things to be broken. For instance, the icon theme is not set by default, but simply changing it in the gnome appearance settings should fix that. Running both Conky and Skippy from a run diolauge or a terminal is necessary to get them to work. Pressing F12 will then activate Skippy. More features should be added in later updates.

Software List:
  • Firefox
  • Pidgin
  • Transmission
  • Gimp
  • Inkscape
  • Gpicview
  • Shutter
  • Leafpad
  • Libreoffice
  • Vlc
  • Clementine
  • K3B
  • Thunar

Sidux Linux

On 24 of November 2006 sidux was formed by a group of people whom wanted to be the best Debian sid live distro and hard disk install distro available.
With milestones and planned releases timetabled so as to give stability to corporate and home users a definable path over time.
1) sidux detects and enables you to instantly use more different pieces of hardware than any other operating system today (including other Linuxes) without the need to search for drivers from hardware vendors' web sites or complicated installation routines. Everything comes ready on a fast live-CD, and can be installed to your hard drive in just a few minutes. Only non-free stuff may require additional action.
2) sidux gives you direct and 100% compatible access to the worlds' biggest repository of software packages (more than 17.000 at the moment in Debian sid), all of them free and open source, many of them of professional quality. No virus, no Trojans --and again no complicated searching of hundreds of web sites for an application, and then running dubious installers.
3) sidux is free, open source and comes with free & priceless 24/7 support via this forum and chat (the IRC). Our support staff is friendly, helpful and very highly skilled - some of them are developers of this operating system themselves, others are accessible for complicated escalated support issues.
4) sidux is not corporate driven, but community driven. Actually, we are a community of volunteers who share a common goal --building the brilliant operating system.
5) sidux is extremely flexible and offers a huge load of ready-made scripts and meta-packages. You may use them to mutate it into a secure server system, a high class music studio, a professional graphics design workstation, a corporate desktop --or whatever you actually need.
6) sidux is always bleeding edge technology, packed into a tested and stable combination which is ready for use. It is moving very fast, and will always bring to you the hippest and most interesting developments first. sidux is also one of the few operating systems where you can get a 64bit system with real 64bit compiled applications --and again providing the 100% compatible access to Debian sid.
7) sidux is multilingual --people from all over the world meet here and talk in their native, but also secondary languages. We believe in the power of shared and open communication: therefore, we don't split the community by countries or languages, but concentrate them. Many people here do speak several languages and are using them when helping you.
There is definitely much more to say --but that's it for the beginning.
